The *Jyeshtha Adhik Maas* (Intercalary Month of Jyeshtha) begins on May 17th. In Hinduism, this month is considered extremely sacred. It is also known by the names *Adhik Maas*, *Malmaas*, and *Purushottam Maas*. It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu, engaging in spiritual austerities (*tap*), chanting (*jap*), and performing acts of charity during this month yield manifold spiritual merit. It is said that good deeds performed during this period bear fruit quickly, and an atmosphere of happiness and prosperity prevails within the home.
**What is *Malmaas*?**
Mahant Kameshvaranand Vedantacharya explains that *Malmaas* occurs once every three years. According to the Hindu *Panchang* (almanac), an extra month is added to the calendar cycle every three years; this is referred to as *Adhik Maas*. Historically, this month was known as *Malmaas*. Since the word *'Mal'* signifies impurity or waste, it was given the name *Malmaas*. However, Lord Vishnu bestowed His own name upon it, thereby transforming it into *Purushottam Maas*. Since then, this month has been regarded as being dedicated specifically to Lord Vishnu.
**What to Do During *Purushottam Maas***
Mahant Kameshvaranand Vedantacharya suggests that one should devote oneself primarily to the worship of Lord Vishnu during this month. If possible, one should listen to the *Bhagavat Katha* (narrations of the *Bhagavata Purana*) and read the *Bhagavat* scripture at home. Reciting the *Vishnu Sahasranama* (the thousand names of Vishnu) is also considered highly auspicious. *Malpuas* (sweet pancakes) are extremely dear to Lord Vishnu. Therefore, one should place 33 *Malpuas* in a bronze vessel and offer them before Lord Lakshmi-Narayan. Subsequently, one should chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namah" and pray to the Lord to alleviate suffering and poverty. Finally, these *Malpuas* should be distributed among the needy. This act is considered to be highly meritorious.
**What Not to Do During *Malmaas***
Mahant Kameshvaranand Vedantacharya advises that auspicious ceremonies—such as weddings—should not be conducted during *Adhik Maas*. This month is intended to be dedicated entirely to spiritual practice and discipline. One should undertake only those activities that contribute to one's spiritual welfare and accumulation of merit in the afterlife. The more one engages in chanting (*jap*), spiritual austerities (*tap*), and devotional singing (*bhajan*), the greater the spiritual benefit one will derive. During this *Malmas*, one should bathe in holy rivers like the Ganges, engage in acts of charity and merit, and assist the needy. It is believed that offering sincere devotion to Lord Vishnu during this month helps resolve stalled tasks and brings happiness and prosperity into one's life.
