New Delhi: In a shocking re-run of 2012 Nirabhaya incident, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped aboard a moving sleeper bus in Nangloi area of Delhi

The driver and the conductor of the bus have been arrested.

The assault took place late on Monday when the survivor, a resident of Pitampura slums employed at a Mangolpuri factory, was heading home on foot after completing her shift. “She arrived at the B-Block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar, where a sleeper bus pulled up. She reportedly asked a man standing at the bus door for the time, but instead of helping her, the accused allegedly dragged her inside the vehicle forcibly,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer West) Vikram Singh was quoted as saying.

Victim Dragged In, Assault Lasts Two Hours

Once on board, “the bus doors were shut immediately after she was pulled inside, after which the vehicle moved for close to two hours along a nearly 7 km stretch near the Nangloi Metro station,” the survivor told police.

According to police, curtains on the bus concealed the assault from outsiders. The woman alleged that the perpetrators threw her off the bus in an injured condition around 2 am before fleeing the scene. She reported the matter to police soon after.

Acting on the woman’s complaint, police at Rani Bagh station registered an FIR. The DCP stated that Umesh and Rajendra, the two named accused, have been arrested. The Bihar-registered bus has also been seized for forensic scrutiny.

The survivor received medical attention, but declined to be admitted to hospital. “Her husband is suffering from tuberculosis and she has children to take care of, due to which she chose to continue treatment from home,” police said.

Delhi Police said the case is being investigated from all possible angles.
