Friends, since the launch of UPI in 2016, there has been a revolution in money transactions, you can send or receive money from anywhere to anyone with your mobile phone, UPI has now become an essential part of everyday life. From shopping and bill payments to transferring money, everything is now done in a matter of seconds. Along with this convenience, cyber fraud to UPI transactions is also increasing at an alarming rate.
From fake QR codes and screen-sharing apps to fake customer care numbers and suspicious links, scammers are targeting unsuspecting users across the country. Let us know in how many ways online fraud can happen-
Fake QR Codes: The Biggest Trap
Nowadays the most common method of UPI fraud is fake QR codes. Scammers often pose as shopkeepers, buyers, delivery agents or company representatives and send QR codes, as soon as someone scans that code and enters their UPI PIN, money is deducted from their account.
Cyber experts repeatedly warn users that scanning a QR code and entering a PIN always means sending money — not receiving money. Users should avoid scanning QR codes shared by unknown people or received from suspicious messages and offers.
Screen-sharing apps are becoming a big threat
Cybercriminals are also misusing screen-sharing apps to access bank accounts. Fraudsters often pose as bank officers or customer care executives.
Once the app is installed and screen-sharing is allowed, scammers can remotely control the victim’s smartphone.
Experts strongly advise users to never install screen-sharing apps at the request of strangers and to never allow strangers to access their mobile devices.
Fake customer care numbers and fake links
Many people unknowingly become victims of fraud while searching for customer care numbers online. Cyber criminals create fake helpline numbers and fake websites with the aim of stealing sensitive information.
