The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise will revert to its original name, the Barbados Tridents, starting from the 2026 season. This change marks the end of a five-year period during which the team was known as the Barbados Royals. Owned by Royals Sports Group, the franchise will also return to the traditional blue-and-yellow colors of Barbados, moving away from the pink uniforms introduced in 2021. This rebranding is part of a new three-year partnership called "One Barbados," which involves the Government of Barbados becoming a minority co-investor in the franchise, pending regulatory approvals. Royals Sports Group will maintain majority ownership and manage daily operations, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. The rebranding will encompass both the men's and women's teams, including the Women's CPL team established in 2022.

A Partnership Reflecting National Pride

Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, expressed that the return of the Tridents' identity symbolizes the nation's pride and aspirations as it nears its 60th independence anniversary. "Cricket has always been a fundamental aspect of our national identity and self-determination. Therefore, it is fitting that through this partnership, we will see ourselves represented in our national colors, with a name that resonates with our identity," Mottley stated in a joint announcement.

Public-Private Collaboration

Manoj Badale, the lead owner of Royals Sports Group, characterized this collaboration as a significant public-private partnership in franchise cricket. "Reintroducing the franchise as the Barbados Tridents, adorned in national colors, is a strong declaration of pride and purpose," Badale remarked. He emphasized their commitment to Barbados, the CPL, and a clear goal: to achieve sustained success by bringing home both the men's and women's CPL titles.

Charity Initiative: 'Pink Promise' Match

In conjunction with this initiative, the franchise plans to host a "Pink Promise" charity match during the CPL season to support various charitable endeavors in Barbados.

Historical Context

The Tridents were among the inaugural franchises in the CPL, competing under that name from the league's launch in 2013 until 2020, securing championships in 2014 and 2019. They were renamed Barbados Royals following the acquisition by Royals Sports Group in 2021.

Looking Forward to 2026

Under the leadership of West Indies player Rovman Powell, the franchise faced a challenging 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the standings. The 2026 CPL season is set to commence on August 8, with the Barbados Tridents scheduled to kick off their campaign against the Jamaica Kingsmen on August 11.
