Chennai:Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has granted special permission for 9 am screenings of the upcoming film Karuppu, drawing attention from both the film industry and fans just days after assuming office.
The decision comes shortly after Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister, marking one of his first high-profile moves intersecting governance and the entertainment sector. The makers of Karuppu confirmed the development on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, sharing a photograph of the Chief Minister at work in his office.
“Special thanks to our honourable Chief Minister Thiru. Joseph Vijay for granting the special permission for the 9AM shows of #Karuppu. #Karuppu – FDFS begins at 9AM, from May 14,” the post read.
Early screenings return to Tamil Nadu
Early morning shows, particularly first-day-first-show (FDFS) screenings, have long been a hallmark of major film releases in India, especially in the southern states where fan celebrations are often intense.
However, in Tamil Nadu, theatres have largely moved away from early screenings in recent years due to concerns over crowd management and law and order issues during high-profile releases. The decision to allow 9 am shows for Karuppu signals a controlled return of the practice under official approval.
Industry observers note that this move could set a precedent for future big-ticket releases, provided the screenings are conducted smoothly without incidents.
Star-studded film set for release
Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, is one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. The action drama stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles, marking another major collaboration involving top names in the industry.
The film also features a strong supporting cast including Indrans, Natty, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi and Supreeth Reddy. Music for the film has been composed by Sai Abhyankkar, adding to the buzz surrounding its release.
Scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14, the film is expected to draw large crowds, especially with the added excitement of early screenings.
Vijay and Trisha’s enduring screen pairing
Vijay and Trisha Krishnan remain one of Tamil cinema’s most popular on-screen pairs, having delivered several successful films together over the years. Their collaborations include hits such as Ghilli, Thirupaachi, Aathi, Kuruvi and more recently Leo.
Their pairing continues to enjoy a strong fan following, contributing to sustained interest in projects involving either of the actors.
Speculation continues off-screen
Apart from their professional collaborations, Vijay and Trisha have often been the subject of speculation regarding their personal relationship. The rumours gained traction again after Trisha attended Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister.
While neither Vijay nor Trisha has publicly commented on these claims, their association continues to attract attention on social media. Reports of Vijay’s divorce proceedings in recent times have further fuelled discussions, with some political figures also referencing the speculation while criticising the actor-turned-politician.
Industry and fan response
The decision to allow 9 am shows for Karuppu has been largely welcomed by fans and theatre owners, who view it as an opportunity to revive the festive atmosphere associated with major film releases.
At the same time, authorities are expected to ensure that adequate security arrangements are in place to manage crowds and prevent any untoward incidents during the early screenings.
Conclusion
Vijay’s approval for special morning shows of Karuppu highlights the continuing intersection of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu. As the film gears up for release, all eyes will be on how the early screenings are managed and whether this marks the return of a long-standing theatrical tradition in the state.
