Richard Osman addresses BAFTAs snub after backstage moment convinced him 'this is it'

Richard Osman thought "this is it" moments before he was overlooked for a BAFTA Award. The 55-year-old was nominated in the Daytime TV category with his BBC quiz show House of Games.

It was Richard's last chance to win the prestigious award with the show, having recently called time on his nine-year spell as host. Later this year he will hand over the reins to Hollywood star Michael Sheen. Richard has previously admitted it "would be fun" to win after BAFTA having been nominated in the same category last year. However it was Clive Myrie's Caribbean Adventure that took home the accolade.

This year Richard faced competition from Scam Interceptors, Lorraine, and The Chase in the hotly contested category. And for a moment, the star thought he might have even won an award.

Speaking on his The Rest is Entertainment podcast, Richard said: "I did think maybe a sympathy Bafta but nothing. This is how these award ceremony works, I was giving out an award as well, to Martin Lewis, and when you do that, someone comes to get you from your seat to take you around to the back in advance of you doing it.

"But the one I was giving out was quite soon after the Daytime Bafta and she said, 'Oh, of course, if you've won, then actually I'll collect you from the side of the stage, not the audience'. And as we were getting closer to our award, we hadn't been collected, I thought, 'Oh my God, this is it, we've finally done it, this team, this wonderful team, I'm going to leave them with a Bafta after nine years of incredible work'."

Unfortunately for Richard, Scam Interceptors eventually walked away with the Bafta. He continued: "I'd like to say we had a fun evening, but even then. I was delighted that Scam Interceptors won it."

Richard has previously revealed the unusual reason why he would like to win a BAFTA. Last year, he explained: "It could not matter less if you win, but when you're there and some people have just won, you think, 'Maybe it would be fun to win, I have sat through three and a half hours of this and I do really need a wee'.

"If you win, you get to go backstage so you don't have to watch the rest of it. That's the thing, if you win, you're on stage and then you go and do the press conference.

"You're literally thinking, 'If we win, first, we've won a BAFTA, which would be nice, but more importantly, I don't have to watch the rest of the show, I've done two-and-a-half hours and I've clapped lots of people' but anyway, we didn't."

Richard presented the BAFTA Special Award to Martin Lewis at the weekend. Upon receiving the award for his ITV show, Martin joked that it was "a PowerPoint presentation with a Q&A afterwards".
