Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings IPL 2026: Axar Patel Leads Thrilling Three-Wicket Victory

In a high-scoring thriller at Dharamshala, Delhi Capitals staged a sensational comeback to defeat Punjab Kings by three wickets in the Indian Premier League 2026. The dramatic result handed Punjab their fourth consecutive defeat and dealt a major blow to their playoff momentum.

Chasing a daunting target of 211 runs, Delhi Capitals showed remarkable composure under pressure to reach 216-7 with an over remaining. Captain Axar Patel led from the front with a crucial 56-run knock, while veteran finisher David Miller smashed a rapid half-century to keep Delhi alive in the playoff race.

The defeat was another painful setback for Punjab Kings, who despite remaining fourth in the points table, are now facing increasing pressure after losing four matches in a row. Delhi, meanwhile, climbed back into contention and kept their hopes of reaching the IPL 2026 playoffs alive.

Punjab Kings Post Massive Total But Fail to Defend

Batting first, Punjab Kings delivered a powerful batting display and posted an imposing 210-5 on the board. Skipper Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 59, while young opener Priyansh Arya continued his impressive season with a fluent 56.

Punjab looked in complete control for most of the innings. Delhi’s overseas pace attack struggled badly during the powerplay overs. Mitchell Starc endured a difficult outing, conceding 57 runs in his spell, including 22 runs in his very first over. Lungi Ngidi also proved expensive as Punjab’s batters attacked aggressively from the start.

However, Delhi found some relief through their Indian pace bowlers. Mukesh Kumar and young Madhav Tiwari picked up three wickets each and prevented Punjab from crossing the 230-run mark. Despite the late wickets, Punjab captain Iyer later admitted he believed his side had at least 30 runs more than what was needed on that pitch.

The total still looked more than competitive, especially considering Punjab’s recent bowling performances at the death. But Delhi had other plans.

Axar Patel and David Miller Change the Game

Delhi Capitals’ chase began poorly as Punjab struck early blows. At 74-4 in the ninth over, the match appeared to be slipping away from Delhi. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh bowled with excellent discipline and removed key batters, including Delhi’s leading run-scorer KL Rahul for just 9 runs.

With pressure mounting rapidly, captain Axar Patel stepped up with one of his most impactful innings of the season. Axar combined aggression with calm decision-making and rebuilt the innings alongside David Miller in a crucial 64-run partnership.

Patel eventually completed his first half-century of IPL 2026 and admitted after the match that a dropped catch early in his innings helped change his fortunes.

David Miller then accelerated brilliantly during the middle overs. The South African batter hammered 51 runs from just 28 balls, taking on Punjab’s pace attack with fearless strokeplay. His finishing ability shifted momentum completely in Delhi’s favour.

Even after both Axar and Miller were dismissed, Delhi continued attacking. Impact substitute Ashutosh Sharma played a fiery cameo of 24 runs off just 10 balls, while young Madhav Tiwari contributed a valuable 18 from 8 deliveries to seal the victory in the final overs.

Delhi’s aggressive lower-order batting exposed Punjab’s bowling struggles once again, particularly under pressure in crunch moments.

Punjab Kings’ Losing Streak Raises Serious Questions

Punjab Kings began IPL 2026 strongly and were once among the tournament leaders. However, four consecutive losses have suddenly shifted the narrative around the team.

The batting unit continues to perform consistently, but Punjab’s bowling attack has struggled badly during death overs. Their inability to defend big totals has become a major concern as the tournament approaches the business end.

The team management will also be worried about the lack of control shown by the pace bowlers in high-pressure situations. Despite posting 210 runs, Punjab failed to contain Delhi’s middle and lower order.

For Delhi Capitals, the victory could become a turning point in their season. After a difficult campaign filled with inconsistency, the team finally showed the resilience and finishing strength needed in knockout-style matches.

Captain Axar Patel praised the team spirit after the game and expressed confidence in Delhi’s future.

“The cricket we are playing and the players we have, the future is strong,” Patel said after the match.

The IPL 2026 playoff race is now becoming increasingly intense, with several teams still mathematically alive. Delhi’s thrilling win has added fresh excitement to the tournament, while Punjab Kings must quickly recover before their campaign slips further away.
