New Delhi: India may need to reduce domestic fuel demand by up to 20 per cent through voluntary changes in consumption patterns as global energy markets face mounting pressure due to the Middle East crisis. According to an NDTV report, the government is seeking public participation to help the country remain stable during periods of volatile fuel prices and supply disruptions.

Amid rising crude oil prices and fears of supply chain disruptions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to reduce the use of petrol and diesel. He encouraged people to use public transport, adopt carpooling, and once again prioritise work-from-home, online meetings and virtual conferences to save fuel and foreign exchange reserves.

The prime minister also urged citizens to avoid foreign vacations for the time being and refrain from purchasing gold and other imported goods. He advised people to reduce the consumption of edible oil and chemical fertilisers and strengthen the domestic economy by choosing Indian-made products over foreign brands.

The report added that global fuel demand may need to decline by around 3-4 per cent to stabilise energy markets. Several countries are exploring similar energy conservation and demand-management measures as crude oil prices continue to surge amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
