Royal Challengers Bengaluru held their nerve in a dramatic final-over finish to defeat Mumbai Indians by two wickets in a thrilling IPL 2026 clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Sunday, officially ending MI’s hopes of reaching the playoffs.
In a match filled with momentum swings and mounting tension, RCB chased down a target of 167 on the final ball of the innings to pull off one of the most dramatic victories of the season.
The chase got off to a disastrous start for Bengaluru as Virat Kohli fell for a golden duck and skipper Rajat Patidar departed soon after. Mumbai’s pace duo of Deepak Chahar and Corbin Bosch made full use of the new-ball conditions, leaving RCB struggling early in the innings.
With the pressure mounting, Krunal Pandya stepped up with a composed and match-defining knock of 73 off 46 deliveries. Mixing caution with aggression, Krunal steadied the innings while finding timely boundaries to keep RCB alive in the chase. Jitesh Sharma also chipped in with a useful contribution as the visitors slowly rebuilt after the early collapse.
Mumbai continued to apply pressure through Jasprit Bumrah and Raj Bawa, who kept the required rate under control during the middle and death overs. But Krunal’s calm presence ensured RCB stayed within touching distance heading into the final over.
The game exploded into chaos in the closing moments.
At 19.3 overs, Romario Shepherd was dismissed after Tilak Varma completed a sharp catch at backward point, briefly pushing Mumbai back into the contest. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar then produced a crucial moment with the bat, smashing a towering six over deep cover at 19.4 to tilt the game once again.
A scrambled single on the next delivery left RCB needing just one run off the final ball. What followed was pure drama. Rasikh Salam Dar drove the ball back towards Raj Bawa, who failed to collect cleanly under immense pressure. As the ball rolled away, the batters sprinted for the winning run while Mumbai attempted a desperate run-out. Ryan Rickelton’s late effort at the stumps was not enough, as replays confirmed Rasikh had made his ground in time.
The thrilling win sparked celebrations in the RCB camp while confirming Mumbai Indians’ exit from the playoff race.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted 166 for 7 after being asked to bat first. Rohit Sharma gave the innings early momentum with a quickfire 22 off 10 balls, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar soon turned the tide with a disciplined spell that removed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav cheaply.
Reduced to 28 for 3, MI were rescued by a crucial 82-run partnership between Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir. Tilak struck a fluent 57 while Dhir added 47, helping Mumbai recover from the top-order collapse. However, the innings lost momentum in the final overs as RCB’s bowlers prevented a late flourish.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar starred with the ball, finishing with superb figures of 4 for 23, while Josh Hazlewood and Romario Shepherd provided solid support to restrict MI to a manageable total.
In the end, RCB kept their composure in the biggest moments to script a memorable win in a contest that went right down to the wire.
Brief Scores:
Mumbai Indians 166/7 in 20 overs (Tilak Varma 57, Naman Dhir 47; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 4/23) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 167/8 in 20 overs (Krunal Pandya 73; Corbin Bosch 4/29) by 2 wickets.
