Every actor often highlights how a career as an actor is nothing short of a journey filled with uncertainties, and that the idea of overnight success is often just that, an idea. Something similar happened with Kiara Advani as well, who might have risen to fame after films like MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) or Kabir Singh (2019), but it was the 2014 film Fugly, that marked her acting debut, and the fact is, it didn’t do well.

She recently spoke about her journey in the film industry, and that she’s had her fair share of struggles to find work. Here’s what she had to say.

Kiara Advani on struggling to find work after Fugly

Kiara recently appeared on Raj Shamani’s podcast, and spoke about how she’s had a difficult phase in her career when she did not have back-to-back work opportunities, and had to deal with uncertainty, especially after her films did not work at the box office.

Nonetheless, she did highlight how she did not let that discourage her, and chose to take everything that came her way as a learning experience, which has eventually helped her grow as an actor.

She opened up on how after her debut film, Fugly, failed at the box office, the critical appreciation did not translate to work opportinities. She added that it was a time when she continues to audition, deal with rejections, and land a role everyone once in a while.

The actor said “After that film (Fugly), there was a big lull because the film didn’t open well. However, critically, several critics praised my performance. But, nothing translated into work. So, it was the same waiting game of going to auditions, some making it, some not. Lots of your choices are also limited. When you are starting off and don’t deliver commercially, the opportunities coming your way are much less. The process is longer.”

However, she said that she did not let anything reduce her passion, and when she looks back at the journey, she is grateful for everything she went through during the tough times. She also highlighted how the lows in her career were her ‘biggest teachers’ after all.

In fact, she also went on to talk about how even after MS Dhoni and Kabir Singh’s success, it’s not like she suddenly had it easy, and that it was still the same story and she had to struggle for roles. While Kabir Singh did help her get added momentum, she added that she’s had to work hard to establish herself in the industry.

Kiara continued, “Even after Dhoni, it was the same story. Kabir Singh released in 2019 and then there was no looking back. Those five years had a lot of auditions, waiting, rejections and a few films that I was shooting for. I knew work would bring work, and that actually happened. That’s the age when you are so driven about giving your best.”

On the work front, Kiara is currently gearing up for the release of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown Ups. The movie was slated for a June release; however, there’s no update on the release date after the makers and Yash announced that they want to align the film better for the global release.
