Kolkata: Three sharpshooters implicated in the assassination of Chandranath Rath are set to appear in a Barasat district court in North 24 Parganas on Monday.
These individuals were apprehended by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police, which is actively investigating the murder.
Chandranath Rath, who served as the personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, was fatally shot on May 6 by assailants on motorcycles.
The trio will be presented in court later today, where the public prosecutor is expected to request their police custody, according to sources familiar with the case.
Authorities have opted to keep the identities of the shooters confidential until they are formally presented in court and custody is granted to the investigation team.
Details regarding the specific location in Uttar Pradesh where the suspects were captured remain undisclosed by the investigating officials.
Reports indicate that the suspects were discreetly transported to Kolkata on Sunday night and taken to the Bhabani Bhavan police headquarters in South Kolkata, where they were interrogated throughout the night.
Rath's murder occurred just two days after the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced on May 4, which saw BJP candidates winning 207 constituencies, significantly diminishing the Trinamool Congress's representation to 80 seats.
On the night of his murder, Rath was returning home to Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas after attending a party event when his vehicle was obstructed by another car.
Initial investigations suggest that as Rath's vehicle was halted, one of two motorcycles that had been following him pulled up alongside and an assailant fired ten shots at close range.
Rath was pronounced dead at the scene, while his driver, Buddhadeb Bera, sustained serious injuries but is reportedly recovering well.
Further investigations revealed that the license plates on the vehicle that blocked Rath's car, as well as those on the motorcycles used in the attack, were counterfeit.
Adhikari has stated that Rath's assassination might not have occurred had he not been the personal assistant to the individual who defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by over 15,000 votes in Bhabanipur.
