The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi is a prominent name in India's public healthcare sector. However, recent reports indicate a significant number of doctors are leaving the institution for other opportunities, creating challenges for the AIIMS administration. Let's explore the reasons behind this exodus from one of the largest government hospitals in India.
Serious Allegations Against AIIMS Administration
According to sources, despite repeated directives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the AIIMS administration has shown a persistent lack of responsiveness in implementing these guidelines. Many doctors have expressed that the work environment at AIIMS has deteriorated, leading them to consider leaving the institution.
Irregularities in Patient Management
In recent years, several serious issues have emerged regarding irregularities in patient admissions, transfers, and discharge processes across various departments at AIIMS Delhi. These irregularities have adversely affected patient care, departmental audits, and hospital statistics. Dr. A.K. Bisoi has reportedly demanded accountability for these issues and has brought them to the attention of the acting director, Dr. M. Srinivas.
Allegations of Coercion
Additionally, numerous allegations have surfaced claiming that doctors are being coerced into various situations. A notable case involves cardiac surgeon Dr. A.K. Bisoi, which reportedly began with a grievance letter from a nurse in the cardiology department. The nurse claimed she was unable to work effectively, prompting her request for a transfer.
Administrative Response to Grievances
Instead of addressing the grievance at an administrative level, the AIIMS administration allegedly initiated an investigation against Dr. Bisoi for serious allegations of sexual harassment, as reported by the AIIMS Nurses Association. However, on October 23, 2025, the internal complaints committee dismissed the harassment claims.
Nurse's Struggles with Work Pressure
It has been reported that the female nurse managed administrative and computer-related tasks but faced increasing scrutiny regarding her work methods and patient care. Unable to cope with the pressure, she sought a transfer and filed a complaint.
Concerns Over Administrative Transparency
Some believe that the serious administrative and patient-related issues raised by Dr. Bisoi led to an escalation of allegations against him, aimed at diverting attention and suppressing the matter. This entire episode has raised questions about the transparency and accountability of the hospital's administration.
Influence of Powerful Individuals
Sources claim that certain influential individuals are attempting to suppress the situation. A review meeting by the NCST took place on March 10, but the details were neither made public nor uploaded to the NCST website.
Failure to Follow Directives
Moreover, directives issued on December 31, February 23, and April 15 to retain Dr. Bisoi as the head of the CTVS department and to submit a report promptly have reportedly not been followed, which the ministry is taking seriously. The removal of the former director, Dr. M. Srinivas, and his transfer to the NITI Aayog is believed to be linked to this issue, although no official statement has been released.
