Mangaluru: The pre-monsoon has gained momentum, with several parts of Dakshina Kannada district receiving good rainfall accompanied by thunder on Saturday, May 9.
Areas in and around Sullia witnessed significant showers. In Mangaluru city, heavy rain with thunder and wind occurred during the night, bringing down the temperature and providing relief from the humid weather. The city had experienced sun and cloudy skies until the evening. Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4°C (0.5°C below normal) and a minimum of 25.4°C (0.4°C above normal).
Rain forecast
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain is likely to continue. Thunderstorms are expected in several parts of the coastal region over the next three days.
Heavy rain in Vittal
Heavy rain lashed the Vittal area on Saturday evening. After 5:30 pm, torrential rain accompanied by strong winds, lightning, and thunder started and continued for about 45 minutes.
48 electric poles damaged in Uppinangady
The wind and rain on Friday evening resulted in 48 electric poles being snapped in the Uppinangady MESCOM division, leading to power disruptions on Saturday as well. Trees and branches fell in Hirebandady, Bajathur, Periyadka, Kemmar, and Pardaje. While 28 poles were replaced by Saturday, the main power line from Puttur to Uppinangady remained uncharged until Saturday evening. Additionally, several areca nut trees were uprooted, causing agricultural losses.
Good showers in Puttur
Rain continued in Puttur taluk, with most areas receiving good rainfall on Saturday. While the intensity was lower compared to the heavy downpour on May 8, areas like Bettampady, Sampya, Kabaka, Uppinangady, and Kumbra received steady rain.
Rainfall in Kasaragod
Parts of Kasaragod district, including Perla, Badiyadka, and Kasaragod town, received good rainfall with thunder on Saturday night. Kumbla, Manjeshwar, and Kunjathur saw moderate rain. The IMD center in Thiruvananthapuram has predicted good rainfall across the state until May 15.
Damage in Udupi district
Various parts of Udupi district suffered losses due to the wind and rain, with estimated damages exceeding 70,000. In Mudradi village of Hebri taluk, a cow belonging to Purnima died after a tree fell on it. Trees also fell on the houses of Amitha Bhat in Hebri and Madhava in Karkala, causing partial damage. Agricultural crops were destroyed in the plantations of Godwin Sudhir and Ananda Nayak in Hebri and Kadtala. On Friday night, Karkala recorded 6.7 mm, Kapu 32.6 mm, and Hebri 12.7 mm of rain.
