Mangaluru: MESCOM has completed all preparations to prevent power disruptions and ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply during the upcoming monsoon. A 'Monsoon Special Task Force' comprising 489 personnel and 62 vehicles has been deployed across the MESCOM jurisdiction, which includes Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga districts.
Maintenance work began as early as April, two months ahead of the monsoon season. A dedicated team of 23 members is ready to handle public grievances. These outsourced staff will operate until the end of August, with a target to complete most maintenance tasks by the end of May. The distribution of gangmen includes 12 in Mangaluru, 36 in Kavoor, 48 in Puttur, 50 in Bantwal, 55 in Udupi, 24 in Karkala, and 48 in Kundapura.
Priority has been given to divisions facing staff shortages, with teams operating in day and night shifts. In Mangaluru city, the high density of vehicles and personnel will ensure a rapid response during emergencies.
Ongoing maintenance work
The task force includes local tree-climbing experts and laborers. Key activities include clearing tree branches touching HT and LT power lines, straightening leaning electric poles, tightening sagging wires, and replacing old cables. Maintenance of transformers is also underway.
Challenges in rural areas
In rural regions, power lines often pass through plantations and hilly terrains, increasing the risk of damage from falling trees. To address this, local contractor teams have been formed across 21 sub-divisions. Small teams will be deployed where cranes can be used, while larger teams of 10-12 members will handle repairs in difficult terrains.
Call 1912 for assistance
The department has advised the public to contact local powermen or call the MESCOM helpline at 1912 if they notice coconut fronds or tree branches resting on power lines.

"Pre-monsoon branch trimming is currently underway. While heavy winds and rain can cause tree falls that may take time to repair in rural areas—especially at night—MESCOM is fully prepared for all eventualities." — Harish Kumar, Managing Director, MESCOM
