More than two decades after creating cinematic history with Lagaan, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are reportedly joining hands once again for another sports-based drama. This time, the film is said to revolve around the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. Known for blending emotion, history and sports on screen, the duo’s reunion has already created excitement among fans. Reports suggest that the film is currently in the advanced scripting stage and is expected to begin shooting around September 2026, after months of preparation and creative development.

Sources claim that the script has already gone through multiple reading sessions. The project has reportedly also received creative inputs from Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi. The makers are said to be aiming for a large-scale emotional drama with cricket forming the heart of the narrative.

 

The film will also mark Aamir’s return to the cricket genre after Lagaan, which remains one of the most loved sports dramas in Indian cinema. Fans are especially excited to see Aamir and   collaborate again after 25 years.

Reports further suggest that another major actor may soon join the cast to play the role of Lala Amarnath’s close friend and parallel lead in the film.

The film is expected to be the first among  s upcoming back-to-back projects scheduled from late 2026 onward. Reports suggest that the actor plans to begin work on the sports drama by September 2026 after completing pre-production preparations.

After this film, Aamir is reportedly expected to move on to filmmaker Rahul Mody’s startup-based drama alongside Shraddha Kapoor. The actor is also linked to the much-awaited 3 Idiots sequel, which is expected to go on floors in the second half of 2027.

Because of that legacy, the upcoming collaboration between Aamir and Ashutosh is already being closely watched by both fans and trade analysts. Reports also suggest that the makers are approaching the project on a large scale, with extensive workshops, research sessions and detailed preparation planned before the cameras finally start rolling sometime next year.

For now, however, fans appear most excited about the reunion of Aamir and Ashutosh, whose collaboration on Lagaan continues to remain one of the defining moments in Hindi cinema.
