DORTMUND, Germany (AP) - Eintracht Frankfurt faced a significant setback in its quest for European football next season, losing 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga match on Friday.
The defeat marks a critical moment for Frankfurt, as it struggles to secure a place in European competitions.
Young striker Can Uzun initially gave Frankfurt an early advantage, scoring just two minutes into the match. However, Dortmund quickly turned the tide, scoring three goals to ultimately clinch the victory, leaving Frankfurt's hopes hanging by a thread.
Match Highlights
Can Uzun silenced the home crowd with a goal shortly after kickoff, courtesy of a well-placed assist from Mahmoud Dahoud. This early lead, however, was short-lived as Dortmund responded with two quick goals just before halftime.
Serhou Guirassy leveled the score in the 42nd minute with a stunning finish from a Julian Ryerson cross, and Nico Schlotterbeck put Dortmund ahead during first-half stoppage time, giving the home team a crucial lead going into the break.
Dortmund's Dominance
In the second half, Dortmund continued to assert its dominance, with Samuele Inácio scoring his first goal for the club, extending the lead to 3-1 after volleying in a cross from Max Beier. Despite a late goal from Frankfurt's Jonathan Burkardt, which came three minutes before the final whistle, it proved insufficient to change the outcome of the match.
This victory solidified Dortmund's second place in the Bundesliga standings, securing their position in next season's Champions League, while Frankfurt's aspirations for European football dwindled.
Implications for Frankfurt
The loss is particularly painful for Frankfurt, which is now among three teams vying for the seventh place and the single available playoff spot for the Conference League. With Bayern Munich already crowned champions and Dortmund securing a Champions League spot, the stakes have risen for the remaining teams.
Freiburg, currently holding 44 points, can secure seventh place with a win against Hamburg on Sunday, while Frankfurt remains at 43 points with one game played more. The defeat has handed the momentum to Freiburg, heightening the pressure on Frankfurt as the season draws to a close.
