India’s Veer Chotrani defeated compatriot Abhay Singh in the men’s Round of 64 at the PSA World Championships in Giza on Friday. Chotrani, ranked World No. 43, beat World No. 22 Abhay 14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2 to advance to the Round of 32, while Abhay exited the tournament in the opening round.
The opening game set the tone for a tightly fought encounter, with both players exchanging points throughout. The opening game saw multiple game points, but Chotrani managed to take the lead at the crucial moment and won the round 14-12.
Abhay responded strongly in the second game. Although it was closely fought, with both players repeatedly drawing level on points. However, towards the end of the round, Chotrani lost momentum, and Abhay took advantage to win the game 11-8 and level the match.
The third game saw Abhay completely dominate proceedings. He attacked aggressively, controlled the rallies and raced through the game 11-5 to move one game away from victory.
At that stage, momentum appeared firmly in Abhay’s favour. However, Chotrani responded impressively in the fourth game, regaining composure and slowing down Abhay’s attacking flow. The turnaround helped him claim the game 11-7 and force a decider.
The fifth game turned one-sided as Chotrani took complete control. Abhay struggled to recover momentum while Chotrani dictated the pace and finished strongly with an emphatic 11-2 win.
