DENVER (AP) - As the Colorado Avalanche prepare for Game 3 of their playoff series against the Minnesota Wild, center Brock Nelson acknowledges the emotional conflict that arises from his ties to both teams.
Hailing from Warroad, Minnesota, Nelson understands that his hometown, located about 350 miles from the game venue, may have divided loyalties.
Nelson, who is competing for the Avalanche, views the situation as a potential win-win for Warroad, as either he or the Wild could advance closer to the Stanley Cup title. With the Avalanche leading the series 2-0, Nelson hopes to garner support from his hometown while recognizing the challenges of rooting for opposing teams.
Local Ties and Family Support
Nelson has a strong support network in Warroad, a community known for its passion for hockey. He remarked, "I'll probably put a lot of friendships on pause for now," reflecting on the competitive nature of the series. This weekend, he expects family and friends to attend the game, although he has warned them that his focus will be solely on the competition.
Avalanche defenseman Sam Malinski, also from Minnesota, shares similar sentiments. Growing up in Lakeville, he expressed excitement about returning to the arena where he attended many Wild games. "It will be fun to be back in the same building," he said, highlighting the support he anticipates from his family and friends.
Olympic Achievement
This season has already been significant for Nelson, who contributed to the U.S. Olympic team's victory, securing a gold medal by defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime at the Milan Cortina Games. This achievement marked the first Olympic title in men's hockey for the U.S. since the legendary 1980 'Miracle on Ice' team.
Nelson's family legacy in Olympic hockey is notable, as he joins his grandfather Bill Christian, great-uncle Roger Christian, and uncle Dave Christian in this prestigious honor. He reflected on the intensity of the Olympic experience, stating, "To have that in season was like an extra adrenaline shot."
Rivalry with the Wild
As the Avalanche prepare to face the Wild in their own arena, Nelson aims to capitalize on his past experiences at the venue. He has played there during high school and college, including significant moments while representing the University of North Dakota. "Some good memories there," he noted, aware of the electrifying atmosphere expected during the game.
Nelson emphasized the importance of starting strong and maintaining simplicity in gameplay. "If you come out slow and sluggish and turn the pucks over, obviously they can feed off that, get the crowd into it," he said, indicating his awareness of the crowd's potential impact on the game.
Career Developments
Rumors circulated about potential trades involving Nelson, including interest from the Wild before he was acquired by the Avalanche from the New York Islanders in March 2025. He expressed satisfaction with his decision to join Colorado, stating, "Landed here and we've loved it here."
In June, Nelson signed a three-year extension with the Avalanche worth $22.5 million, reflecting his commitment to the team and his family's happiness in Colorado. He recorded an impressive 33 goals and 32 assists during the regular season, contributing to the Avalanche's recent playoff success.
Teammates commend Nelson for his steady demeanor, with captain Gabriel Landeskog noting his experience and approachability. "Somebody everyone knows they can go and talk to if they need to," Landeskog said, highlighting Nelson's importance as the team heads into critical playoff games.
