Cabaret dancer becomes king

In 1906, kings and big personalities from all the countries of the world came to attend the wedding of Emperor Alfonso XIII of Spain. Along with the kings of many big princely states of India, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala also participated in it. During the pomp of the wedding, the Maharaja also went to Seville to see the fair held on a grand scale every year.

He saw the cabaret dance of Anita Delgado in a pandal of this fair. He had already been told a lot about Delgado's beauty. Initially, when she reached the Maharaja in a group of other dancers, she could not attract much of his attention. But when he showed his magic alone, the Maharaja became enamored with him. The Maharaja soon started growing close to him.

Father gets angry after knowing he already has three wives

Anita Delgado's family background was very weak. Father used to sell boiled potatoes in the city. That income was not enough to meet household expenses. Anita's income was helpful in meeting the needs of the family. Here the Maharaja was desperate to get Anita. On the other hand, Anita was also getting attracted towards him. But before going to India, he felt that his father's approval was necessary.

The Maharaja took the initiative. Asked father for daughter's hand. But he refused outright. After knowing that the Maharaja already had three wives, he became more enraged. But the Maharaja did not lose courage. Told that among his three wives there is no one as beautiful as Anita. Anita also assured her father that she would not have any problems with the Maharaja's other wives. Also assured his father of adequate financial help. The Maharaja finally convinced Anita's father by giving him an amount of six thousand dollars.

The magic descended in a few years

After reaching India, the Maharaja got married. Anita Delgado got the new name Maharani Prem Kaur. The Maharaja was very kind to him for some years. Then the magic started coming down. The Maharaja also started suspecting the Queen's deceit. One night during the trip to London, a fight between the two exposed everything. The Maharaja and the Maharani were staying in adjacent rooms of the Savoy Hotel there. There was a drawing room between these rooms. Khushal Singh, a servant of the Maharaja, used to do duty in the gallery till late night.

One night he saw that the queen had left her room and gone somewhere. He woke up the sleeping king and informed him. When the Maharaja reached the Queen's room after crossing the drawing room, the lights were switched off. There was no queen on the bed, but the bed was arranged in such a way that it felt like someone was sleeping there.

Where did the Queen go from the hotel that night?

The search for the queen started at 1.30 in the night. Other officers of the state staying in the hotel also gathered. When the queen reached her room around dawn, she was overwhelmed by the sharp questions of the angry Maharaja. At this time she was in a disheveled dressing gown. Hair was scattered. On the question of remaining missing so late at night, she clarified that due to lack of sleep, she had gone to her French assistant's room.

The Maharaja had already searched that assistant and other rooms for the Queen. Calling the Queen a liar, the Maharaja accused her of having fun with someone else. In this ordeal that lasted for a long time, the queen fell on the floor crying. His explanation of not committing any disloyalty was not accepted by the Maharaja. The Maharaja went to sleep in his room after ordering British Colonel Enriquez, one of his officers, to prepare the divorce papers in the morning.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Jinnah's explanation also proved ineffective

At the time of this incident, Muhammad Ali Jinnah (later the founder of Pakistan) was also staying in this hotel. He was a friend of both the Maharaja and the Queen. After getting information about last night's uproar, he sat with the Maharaja and tried hard to calm his anger. Jinnah explained to him that there was no concrete evidence of the Queen's infidelity. Mere absence of a few hours at night cannot be a ground for divorce.

The Maharaja was not ready to listen to anything. Seeing no way out, Jinnah set a condition for the queen to pay the amount for her living as per her capacity. Jinnah became enraged at the Maharaja's reply of not giving even a penny. Said that he would present the Queen's case before the Minister looking after India's affairs in London and would advocate on her behalf.

tragic end of love story

The Maharaja's continuous refusal made Jinnah very angry. He kept lobbying the Queen to get the amount as compensation. Meanwhile, the Maharaja and the Maharani, drawn and angry with each other, stayed in separate rooms of the hotel. In the end Jinnah was successful. An annual allowance of thirty-six thousand rupees was fixed for the queen. A separate amount of twenty-four thousand rupees was fixed for Ajit Singh born from her womb. Ajit was a minor then. Later the Maharaja took him along and he was taken care of like other princes.

This tragic love story left behind many bitter memories for the Kapurthala royal family. The Maharaja also suspected Mahijit Singh, the elder son born from the womb of his second queen, of having illicit relations with his late mother Maharani Prem Kaur. When Mahijit Singh got information about this, he even threatened to commit suicide. After the divorce, the Queen lived her life in a luxurious flat in Madrid. He had valuable jewelery and money received from the Maharaja from time to time.
