Apara Ekadashi 2026

Apara Ekadashi Benefits: According to the Hindu calendar, Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month is known as Apara Ekadashi. In the year 2026, this holy date will fall on 13th May i.e. Wednesday. According to mythological beliefs, by fasting on this Ekadashi, a person attains immense virtue and gets freedom from sins committed unknowingly. The meaning of the word 'Apara' is 'Immense', that is, whose results are unlimited. This fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and by observing it, a person gets respect and happiness and prosperity in the society. On this day, devotees take bath early in the morning and worship God and pray with true heart to fulfill their wishes.

Story of King Mahidhwaj and effect of Ekadashi

In ancient times, there was a pious king named Mahidhwaj, whose younger brother Vajradhwaj was very cruel and unrighteous. Vajradhwaj hatched a conspiracy and killed his elder brother and buried his body under a Peepal tree. Due to his untimely death, the soul of King Mahidhwaj started living on the same tree in the form of a ghost and started troubling the passers-by. One day, sage Dhaumya passed that way and with his divine vision, he understood the reason for the king becoming a ghost. The sage felt pity on the king and he himself observed a fast on Apara Ekadashi to free the king from the ghostly life. The sage donated all the virtues of his fast to the king.

Freedom from ghosts and results of fasting

Due to the virtuous effect of Apara Ekadashi, King Mahidhwaj immediately got rid of the ghost. All his sins were washed away and he assumed a divine body and went to heaven. While leaving, the king expressed his gratitude to Rishi Dhaumya and told how this fast freed him from severe sufferings. This story teaches us that no matter how big mistakes have been committed unknowingly, if we take refuge in God and observe the fast as per the rituals, then the sorrows of our life definitely come to an end. Just by listening to this story, a person's sufferings are reduced and he gets mental peace.
