Business Desk – Renewable Energy Network: America’s tech giant Apple has announced an initial investment of Rs 100 crore to promote renewable energy in India. Through this investment, the company aims to develop more than 150 MW of green energy capacity within the country. Apple says that this initiative is an important step towards promoting clean energy, reducing plastic pollution and promoting green startups in India.
Focus on renewable energy
Apple has partnered with renewable energy developer CleanMax for this project. According to the company, the energy capacity generated from this investment will be enough to power approximately 150,000 Indian homes annually. There are also plans to further increase this capacity in the coming years.
It is worth noting that Apple has previously worked on solar projects in India, the aim of which was to run its offices and retail stores completely on 100% renewable energy. Apple has also joined hands with environmental protection organization WWF-India to start efforts towards better management and recycling of plastic waste.
The company has adopted the model of ‘Saahas Zero Waste’, a waste management organization in Goa, where plastic and other recyclables are collected and processed safely. Now there are preparations to spread this model to other cities including Coimbatore.
Help for green startups
In collaboration with social investment organization Acumen, Apple has also started supporting green entrepreneurs. Under this program, the company is providing funding, technical support, mentorship and networking to six early-stage startups. These startups are working in areas like waste management, circular economy and sustainable farming.
Apple says it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels. The company’s current goal is to become completely carbon neutral by 2030. New initiatives started in India are being considered as important steps towards achieving this goal.
