In Tamil Nadu, Vijay Joseph’s newly formed party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has got the maximum number of seats but it is far from majority. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which was in power till now, and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which was in power earlier, also do not have enough seats on their own to form the government. Congress has announced alliance with TVK but Vijay still needs the support of 6 more MLAs. In this situation, the possibility of AIADMK and DMK, the two arch rivals, coming together has created a stir in the politics of Tamil Nadu. It is being said that to stop Vijay, talks have taken place between these two parties as to how the government can be formed.
Ever since Congress, which contested the elections in alliance with DMK, has announced its alliance with TVK, the situation seems to be changing. Both AIADMK and DMK have refused to comment. Earlier, TVK chief Vijay met the Governor and staked claim to form the government with the support of Congress. However, it is being said that Vijay has not been invited for the oath taking ceremony yet due to lack of number of 118 MLAs. This is the reason why different types of discussions are taking place.
What is Tamil Nadu’s numbers game?
If we talk about the pre-poll alliance, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance included many parties. Apart from Congress and DMK, CPI, CPI and VCK are prominent. Out of these, DMK has won 59 seats, Congress 5, CPI 2, CPM 2 and VCK 2 seats. Indian Union Muslim League, which has been an ally of Congress, has also won 2 seats. DMDK, which won one seat, is also part of this alliance. Now if Congress is removed from this then there are total 68 MLAs.
On the other hand, AIADMK, which was at third position, has won a total of 47 seats. Along with that, there is PMK with 4 MLAs and AMMK with one MLA. BJP is also a part of this alliance and one of its candidates has won. If we add its numbers, the total reaches 54.
Now if we add these two alliances then the total number reaches 122 which is enough for majority. In this situation TVK can stay away from power. However, it is considered difficult for parties like IUML, Left and BJP to come together in the same alliance. Left parties have already indicated that they may go with Vijay. In this situation, if DMK and AIADMK want to form the government together, then the number of their MLAs is only 106. In this situation, he will need the support of 12 more MLAs and this is where the matter may worsen.
Will there be a split in AIADMK?
There is a strong discussion since Wednesday morning that AIADMK leaders want to support Vijay. Lisa Martin had even said that Palaniswami himself is talking to TVK leaders. This was followed by reports that senior AIADMK leader Shanmugam along with 30 MLAs may support TVK. However, he did say that he is alone. Later, a meeting of AIADMK was held and the party officially said that TVK will not be supported under any circumstances.
The party has announced not to go with TVK but it is being said that the MLAs have a different opinion. There is also a fear that if AIDMK and DMK decide to come together then there may be a split in AIADMK. The main reason for this is that these two parties in Tamil Nadu are diametrically opposed to each other and if both of them come together, many MLAs may find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. In such a situation, many leaders may prepare to change sides. If this happens then Vijay’s path to victory will become easier and he will be successful in forming the government.
