Geneva: Even as memories of the Covid pandemic linger, a new health concern—Hantavirus—has emerged globally. The first case of Hantavirus has been officially confirmed in Switzerland by the World Health Organization and Swiss authorities. The infection was detected in a व्यक्ति travelling aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, who is currently undergoing treatment in Zurich.

What happened?
The infection was identified on a vessel that departed from Argentina on April 1 carrying 147 passengers. Reports indicate that three passengers have died, while another remains in critical condition. After alerts were issued via email to those onboard, one returning passenger in Switzerland was hospitalised and later confirmed to be infected with the Andes strain of Hantavirus.

How does the virus spread?
Hantavirus is a zoonotic disease that spreads from animals to humans. It is primarily transmitted through contact with saliva, urine, or droppings of rodents such as wild rats. Typically, Hantavirus does not spread from person to person. However, scientists have warned that the Andes strain has the potential for human-to-human transmission. The virus can severely affect the lungs and may also lead to kidney failure.

Swiss authorities and the World Health Organization have stated that there is currently no major risk to the general public. Contact tracing is underway in accordance with international health regulations. Laboratories in Argentina, South Africa, and Switzerland are jointly working to contain the virus.

The World Health Organization has shared updates on its official platforms, noting that necessary medical assistance is being provided to passengers and crew of the ship. Global monitoring of the situation is ongoing, and the public has been advised to remain cautious without panic.
