Manipal: Students who participated in the ninth edition of the Udayavani Vidyarthivani workshop visited the Udayavani head office on May 6 and gained first-hand experience about the functioning of a newsroom and newspaper production.
One of the participating students said that until now, newspapers were mainly used for improving vocabulary during holidays, but the workshop helped them understand the importance of reading newspapers regularly and how newspapers support education.
During the workshop, students learned about various newsroom activities including news sourcing, writing, selection, editing and arranging stories according to newspaper layout requirements.
The participants were also given practical exposure by selecting news stories and suggesting placements suitable for a newspaper page design. Students experienced the day-to-day functioning of a newsroom and also learned about the working of printing machines, colours used in printing and other technical aspects.
Students who participated in the workshop included Aditya P. Kamath, Pranav Kamath, Shubham Kamath, Prarthana Vadiraj, Aadhya P. Shetty, Aaron Fernandes, Mahalakshmi, Dhruti Dayanand and Dhanvi Dayanand.
