Kolkata: Days after BJP won the West Bengal Assembly polls by a landslide margin, focus is now on who will be the next chief minister of the state. As per reports the party will elect its legislative party chief on May 8, while government formation is likely to be on the next day.
Paul won from Asansol DakshinWhile a few names are already doing rounds, senior BJP leader Agnimitra Paul is considered as a frontrunner among women leaders in the state. She won from Asansol Dakshin in the just-concluded Assembly Polls.
As per Hindustan Times, Agnimitra Paul’s name is considered among the probable’s for the CM. According to a BJP leader, while Suvendu Adhikari’s name too is on the list. Some leaders have also proposed the names of state president Samik Bhattacharya and Agnimitra Paul.
Defeated TMC’s Tapas Banerjee in 2026 Bengal pollsIn the recently concluded polls, she defeated TMC’s Tapas Banerjee by a margin of over 40,000 votes, as per the Election Commission of India. She can be an ideal CM if the party leaders wish to name a woman to succeed Mamata Banerjee.
As per her social media account, Paul was a fashion designer before she switched to politics. Her affidavit said she has 23 criminal cases pending against her. Among these cases are allegations of joining in unlawful assembly, rioting, violent protests, rioting, Intentional insult, among others. She has, however, not been convicted in any of these cases.
Served as Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024Paul has also served as a Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024. She was appointed vice-president of the BJP in Bengal. Married to businessman Partho Paul,the couple have two children.
