A routine hiking trip took a dangerous turn on May 4 when two individuals were injured by bears along the Mystic Falls Trail, located near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. The National Park Service reported that emergency responders acted swiftly, and an investigation is currently underway, although details regarding the hikers' conditions remain limited. This incident marks the first bear-related injury to visitors in 2026, with the last similar occurrence recorded in September 2025. The most recent fatal bear encounter in the park occurred in 2015 in the Lake Village area.

Safety Measures and Trail Closures

In response to the attack, park officials promptly closed several trails, campsites, and sections of the backcountry to prioritize visitor safety. The affected areas include the Fairy Falls Trail north of the Grand Prismatic Overlook, Sentinel Meadows Trail, Imperial Meadows Trail, Fairy Creek Trail, and Summit Lake Trail. Additionally, backcountry campsites OG1, OD1, OD2, OD3, OD4, and OD5 have been closed, and fishing along the Firehole River and its tributaries within the closure zone has been temporarily halted.

While some nearby attractions remain accessible, they come with restrictions. Visitors can still explore the Midway Geyser Basin and Black Sand Basin, but the Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail is only open up to the overlook, with access beyond that point restricted. Portions of the Firehole River outside the closure area are still available for fishing.

Visitor Precautions

Officials are urging visitors to exercise caution in bear territory. Key safety measures include maintaining a distance of at least 100 yards from bears, carrying bear spray, making noise while hiking, and avoiding outings during early morning or nighttime hours. It is also advised not to run if a bear is encountered. The closures will remain in effect as the investigation continues.
