OUT or NOT OUT? Nitish Rana Catch After Samson Mistakenly Dislodged Bails Sparks Debate in DC vs CSK
Cricket Gully | May 6, 2026 2:39 AM CST

The Delhi Capitals vs. Chennai Super Kings match of IPL 2026 had a moment of confusion as questions were raised about a dismissal involving Nitish Rana.

It was in the 9.3 over when Nitish Rana was facing Noor Ahmad. Rana attempted to play a sweep shot but it was too short of the batsman, heading towards the leg side where Kartik Sharma collected the catch. Simultaneously, Sanju Samson, in the same movement accidentally knocked the stumps, pulling out the bails, and the catch was already taken at this point. An immediate doubt was raised over the wicket taken.

Reasons Why it Was OUT

A catch is considered to be irrespective of the state of the stumps, as stated in the Laws of Cricket. In a case of catch, what matters the most is that the fielder had full control over the ball, it was not dropped before the catch, and it did not touch the ground.

In this case, the catch was taken clearly and hence the dismissal stood as a taken catch. An unintended removal of bails from the wicketkeeper's end does not influence the taken catch at all. Stumps are only relevant while dealing with run outs, stumpings, or when the bails are off before the ball is delivered and not while dealing with catches.

Capitals' Decision to Bat First Backfired

DC opted to bat but decision did not turn out good for them. DC was able to score 155/7 in their 20 overs after batting first, thanks to unbeaten 40 from Sameer Rizvi and another 38 from Tristan Stubbs. Rana had chipped in 15 off 13 balls before his departure in the middle of the game.

For CSK, Noor Ahmed picked up two wickets and all the other bowler Mukesh Choudhary, Akeal Hosein, Gurjapneet Singh and Jamie Overton picked up one each.

Rana's dismissal continues to be a topic but as per the laws of the game, Rana's decision was fair.
