The results of the assembly elections in West Bengal have lit such a political fire, whose flames are still not subsiding. After the results, the political temperature in the state has risen unexpectedly, with outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not ready to bow down despite her defeat. She has clearly said that she will not resign from her post, as if this is the final declaration of a decisive war. This firm statement of hers has given full opportunity to the Bharatiya Janata Party to be the aggressor, which has immediately raised serious questions on Mamata Banerjee’s intentions and her constitutional status.
BJP’s fiery MP Sambit Patra took a sharp dig at Mamata Banerjee’s statement and said that Mamata ji is saying that she will not even go to the Assembly. Patra asked piercing questions, “How will she go there now? She has lost the election from Bhawanipur seat. She is no longer an MLA.” Attacking the basic principle of democracy, Patra said that after being democratically defeated by the people’s mandate, the right to enter the Assembly naturally ceases. This comment directly questions Mamata’s constitutional rights.
Mamta Banerjee rejected her defeat
On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee has clearly refused to accept her defeat. In a press conference she said bluntly, “I will not resign, I am not defeated.” He termed the election results as part of a deep conspiracy, the blame for which was directly placed on the Election Commission and the Central Government. Mamata Banerjee claimed that these two institutions together have influenced the entire election process. Describing himself as a ‘free bird’, he announced the opening of a new front. She said that now she will focus on strengthening the ‘India Alliance’ at the national level, as if this defeat is the beginning of a new political flight.
Sambit Patra’s taunt on ‘India alliance’
Sambit Patra did not stop here, he also did not miss any opportunity to take a jibe at the internal strife of ‘India Alliance’. Patra questioned Mamata Banerjee’s claim that she had talked to everyone in the alliance, whereas the ground reality was telling something else. According to Patra, during the West Bengal elections, Rahul Gandhi was openly making statements against Mamata Banerjee, and Mamata was also not desisting from attacking the Congress. Terming these statements of Mamata Banerjee as ‘anarchy’, he said that talking like this after the defeat is absolutely not right for Indian democracy. This is not only a violation of political decorum, but is also a direct attack on the respect of the electoral process.
This rhetoric has sparked a new debate in political circles. On one hand, his refusal to leave the chair despite defeat raises questions on constitutional traditions, while on the other hand, opposition parties are calling it an insult to the mandate. Mamata Banerjee calling herself a ‘free bird’ and looking for a new role in national politics is an indication of her future strategy, but at present this political turmoil in the state is not showing any signs of stopping. Along with facing the brunt of inflation, the public is also now witnessing this political tussle, which has become a matter of concern for democracy. Even though the election results have been declared, the storm in West Bengal politics does not seem to be calming down yet, and it can have a deep impact on the political equations of the country.
