An IndiGo flight, numbered 6E108, traveling from Hyderabad to Chandigarh, encountered a serious incident when a power bank exploded onboard. This caused smoke to fill parts of the aircraft, leading to panic among passengers. Fortunately, all passengers were reported safe, and the cabin crew managed to extinguish the fire promptly. The incident took place at Mohali's Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport.
Details of the Incident
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the fire broke out in a power bank located in the seat pocket of a passenger seated in 39C while the aircraft was taxiing towards the bay after landing in Chandigarh. The aircraft was halted in the bay, and the cabin crew utilized two fire extinguishers to combat the flames. Subsequently, all six emergency slides were deployed to evacuate the passengers. There were no reports of injuries among the passengers.
Passenger Experience
The flight carried 198 passengers, including two infants, along with six crew members. Reports indicate that the incident occurred as the aircraft was taxiing towards bay number 1. A passenger in seat 39C noticed smoke and flames emanating from their power bank and immediately alerted the cabin crew. It is suspected that the power bank either malfunctioned or exploded.
Emergency Response
As smoke spread inside the cabin, the situation escalated quickly, causing fear among the passengers. However, the cabin crew acted swiftly, using the onboard fire extinguishers to contain the fire before it could spread further. An emergency was declared, and the evacuation process began around 3:35 PM. Passengers were promptly evacuated from the aircraft.
Arrival of Emergency Services
In the chaos, passengers hurriedly exited the aircraft due to the smoke. One individual sustained minor injuries, but there were no serious injuries or damage reported. Shortly after, at approximately 3:38 PM, an Indian Air Force fire engine arrived at the scene. By the time emergency teams reached, the cabin crew had already managed to control the fire.
