Washington: A US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker issued a “7700” distress signal while flying over the Persian Gulf, indicating a serious in-flight emergency. The aircraft was operating in a sensitive region near Iran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to flight tracking data, the aircraft had taken off from Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates and was conducting operations over the Middle East. The signal was transmitted before the aircraft’s tracking data was lost near Qatar.
Unusual Flight Pattern Before Descent
Data from flight monitoring platforms showed the aircraft circling in the airspace for a period before beginning its descent. Such patterns often suggest pilots are managing a technical issue or preparing for an emergency landing.
However, the exact cause of the emergency remains unknown. There has been no confirmation from US officials regarding mechanical failure, operational complications or any external threat.
No Official Statement Yet
Despite the seriousness of a 7700 emergency code, the US military has not released any official statement on the status of the aircraft or its crew. Similarly, there has been no indication from Iranian authorities linking the incident to any form of hostile action.
Reports from regional media outlets cited flight tracking data but did not provide additional verified details about the situation.
Previous Incident Raises Concerns
The development comes months after a reported attack in March in which a KC-135 aircraft was allegedly shot down in western Iraq. A group identified as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq had claimed responsibility at the time, citing defense of national airspace.
While there is no evidence connecting the current emergency to any attack, the earlier incident has heightened sensitivity around US military operations in the region.
What is the KC-135 Stratotanker?
The KC-135 Stratotanker is a long-serving aerial refueling aircraft used by the US Air Force. Equipped with four turbofan engines, it enables fighter jets, bombers, and allied aircraft to extend their flight duration by refueling mid-air.
Beyond refueling, the aircraft can carry cargo, transport personnel, and support medical evacuation missions with specialized onboard equipment. It has remained a critical part of US military aviation for over six decades.
