SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Monday night, marking a successful end to their six-game losing streak.
Trevor McDonald made an impressive season debut, pitching seven innings and leading the Giants to victory at Oracle Park.
Casey Schmitt contributed significantly by hitting his fifth home run of the season, while Luis Arraez doubled twice and scored two runs. Rafael Devers also made an impact by driving in two runs, contributing to the Giants' first win at home following a challenging 0-6 road trip.
McDonald Shines in Season Debut
Making his first appearance of the season, McDonald (1-0) showcased his skills by matching his career-high of seven innings pitched. He allowed only one run and two hits while striking out eight batters. Despite being struck near his right hip by a powerful line drive from Miguel Andujar, McDonald continued to perform effectively on the mound.
Giants End Power Drought
The Giants had not hit a home run during their winless road trip, a first since 2008. However, Schmitt ended that drought by connecting on a fastball from Padres pitcher Randy Vásquez in the first inning, tying the game at 1-1 after Jackson Merill had homered earlier in the inning.
Arraez, who had already doubled and scored in the first inning, contributed again by doubling in the sixth and scoring on Devers' sacrifice fly, extending the Giants' lead to 3-1.
Late Game Action
In the ninth inning, after Keaton Winn had retired one batter for San Francisco, Laureano homered off Caleb Killian. However, Killian managed to retire the next three batters to secure his first save of the season.
Vásquez (3-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Padres, allowing five hits and three runs in his first career start against the Giants.
Upcoming Matchup
Looking ahead, the Padres are set to start RHP Walker Buehler (1-2, 5.40 ERA) in the middle game of the series on Tuesday. The Giants have yet to announce their starting pitcher for the game.
