Kolkata Police on Monday prohibited victory processions, rallies and public celebrations on May 4, the day of counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, citing the need to maintain public order and ensure smooth completion of the counting process.

In a notification, police said the restriction would remain in force throughout May 4 across its jurisdiction and would apply uniformly to all political parties and groups without exception.
“All such permitted processions shall strictly adhere to the prevailing rules and guidelines and the conditions imposed in the permission,” the notification said.
The notification will be widely publicised through print, electronic and social media, as well as official gazettes and police notice boards, authorities said.

No celebrations on counting day
The order comes as counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections is scheduled to take place on May 4 and is expected to continue through the day. The police warned that any violation of the order would invite legal action under relevant provisions of law.
