New Delhi. There is news of a big relief amidst the problem of LPG gas cylinders across the country. An Indian super tanker ‘Sarvashakti’ carrying at least 45 thousand tonnes of LPG has crossed the Strait of Hormuz and may reach India soon. Let us tell you that amidst the US blockade and Iran’s strictness, it is a big success that the tanker belonging to India has crossed this route and moved ahead. According to the information, this tanker will reach the Indian port under tight security. Its crew is also Indian.
According to a Bloomberg report, this cargo ship was supposed to supply gas to Indian companies. However, IOC has not responded to this matter. Previously, a tanker named Desh Garima arrived at Mumbai Port carrying oil. It should be noted that after the failure of talks in Islamabad, the US imposed a blockade around the Strait of Hormuz. Hundreds of ships have since been stranded around the Strait of Hormuz.
US warns companies
Amid tensions with Iran, the US has told shipping companies that they will face sanctions if they pay any kind of fee to Iran for passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The warning issued by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Friday has further increased the pressure amid the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran over the control of the Strait of Hormuz. Normally, during peace time, about one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran built tollbooths
Iran virtually closed the strait to normal traffic after the US and Israel declared war on February 28, threatening to attack and carrying out attacks on ships. Later, it began providing safe passage to some ships by diverting them to alternative routes closer to its coastline, sometimes charging a fee for this service. The tollbooth-like system is the focus of the US sanctions warning.
According to the OAFC, payment demands may include not only cash, but also ‘digital assets, settlements, informal swaps, or other forms of in-kind payments’, including charitable donations and payments made at Iranian embassies.
The US imposed a naval blockade of its own on April 13 in response to Iran’s closure of the strait, preventing any Iranian oil tankers from leaving and depriving Iran of the oil revenue it needs to prop up its weakened economy. US Central Command said 45 commercial vessels have been asked to turn back since the blockade began.
