Drivers often need to put their pet into the car but what so many don't know is that there are rules and regulations which need to be followed. Whether you're heading to the beach or running some errands, you are of course allowed to take your dog but it's important to do some research first.
To help drivers stay safe on the road, Keith Hawes, Director of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, has shared a lesser-known reason drivers may be breaking the highway code. Pet owners are being warned that having an unsecured pet could result in a hefty fine of up to £5,000.
Rule 57 of the highway code requires pets to be safely restrained so they cannot distract the driver or injure themselves or others during an emergency stop.
The government website guides suitable restraining methods, including seat belt harnesses, pet carriers, dog cages, and dog guards.
The best type of restraint varies depending on the pet, so owners should test a few versions to make sure their pet is happy, comfortable and secure for long journeys.
This is to ensure the dog doesn't distract the driver and is less likely to cause injury to themselves or others if the car stops quickly.
Not only this but, the Highway Code also states that your dog can't travel in the passenger seat as this is also more likely to cause driver distraction. It can be particularly dangerous if the car has a passenger airbag.
If pet owners fail to adhere to any of these rules when their dog or another type of animal is in the car, it can be considered as 'driving without due care and attention' and could result in a £5,000 fine and even lead to a court appearance.
If you are travelling with a dog, there's other things you should also be considering.
This should go without saying but hot cars are extremely dangerous for dogs, warns Halfords. If you're visiting somewhere that's not dog friendly, avoid travelling with them in these instances.
You can also invest in a pet carrier which will help keep your dog secure in your vehicle.
