The United Nations Committee Against Torture has expressed serious concern about the human rights situation in Pakistan. In its recent report, the committee has raised questions over alleged torture, arbitrary detention and retaliatory actions against political leaders, human rights activists and journalists in the country.
Let us tell you, names like former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, political activist Idris Khattak, Bushra Bibi, Ali Wazir and Mehrang Baloch have been specifically mentioned in the report. The Committee has said that there remains serious concern about the lack of proper medical care and legal rights during detention in these cases.
The UN committee has appealed to the Government of Pakistan to review all such cases in which people have been detained for alleged political reasons. Also, it should be ensured that the detained people do not have to face any kind of inhuman torture or ill-treatment.
The report also said that incidents of intimidation, arbitrary arrests, violence and forced disappearances have been reported against human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers and people involved in protests, which are extremely worrying.
Additionally, the Committee expressed concern over the large-scale return of Afghan nationals and their deportation without proper security assessment. The UN has recommended Pakistan to conduct an impartial investigation into all these cases and take action against those responsible.
The UN Committee has clearly stated that concrete steps should be taken to protect human rights and ensure justice and treatment to the victims.
