New Delhi: ICE production of the Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman ended in 2025, and the brand is now preparing to bid farewell to its combustion-powered compact SUVs. The ICE-powered Porsche Macan, one of the brand’s most successful models in the world, is walking out of production.
Instead of tapering production, Porsche is taking an aggressive stance. At its Leipzig factory, the brand is ramping up output of the petrol-powered Macan, building as many units as possible before the line goes silent later this summer. Whilst speaking during the Q1 2026 earnings calls, Jochen Breckner, Board Member for Finance and IT, confirmed the strategy of maximising production for now, stockpiling inventory, and sustaining supply well into the coming years.
Depending on market demand and availability, these vehicles could remain on sale in certain regions through 2027.
Porsche Macan’s ICE remains in heavy demandThe reason for this is simple, which is that the demand hasn’t gone away for now. Breckner further noted the original Macan continues to see strong traction in key markets like the United States, despite being over a decade old. Porsche is keen to capitalise on that demand, particularly as interest in the electric Macan remains comparatively softer.
Numbers do support this strategy, even though Macan is quite an old car now. In fact, in the USA, it has been outselling its electric successor. In just the first three months of the year, Porsche has delivered 10,130 units of the ICE model, which is 2,051 units more than the EV.
Of course, all of this does say that there is a need for a direct successor of the ICE Macan, but that clearly isn’t happening any time soon. Coming as part of the €1 billion deal between Porsche and Audi, the all-new ICE crossover placed below the Cayenne is scheduled to arrive in 2028 but will come with a different name. It will be mechanically related to the Audi Q5, Michael Leiters, CEO of Porsche, has said that it will be a Porsche to the core.
