A suicide note believed to have been written by Jeffrey Epstein before his death in August 2019 has remained sealed and confidential for several years, according to a report by The New York Times.
The note was reportedly discovered by Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, in July 2019—shortly after Epstein’s first reported suicide attempt, when he was found unconscious with fabric around his neck.
Tartaglione said the note was hidden inside a graphic novel in their shared prison cell. Written on a yellow sheet torn from a legal pad, it allegedly contained the words “time to say goodbye.”
Instead of handing it over to prison officials, Tartaglione gave the note to his legal team, who later claimed to have verified its authenticity. He stated that he withheld it from authorities out of concern that Epstein might accuse him of staging an attack to resemble a suicide attempt.
A federal judge overseeing Tartaglione’s case subsequently ordered the document to be sealed. As per the report, the note has not been examined by the Justice Department or investigators looking into Epstein’s death and has not been made public.
The newspaper has urged the court to release the note, stating that it could offer insight into Epstein’s mental state in the period leading up to his death and is not directly relevant to Tartaglione’s case.
The issue has resurfaced amid continued scrutiny of extensive records related to Epstein, including documents, photographs, and correspondence linked to his alleged abuse network and associations with influential individuals.
Epstein was arrested for a second time on July 6, 2019, on federal sex trafficking charges and died in custody before his trial. His death at the Manhattan Correctional Center raised concerns over prison security, particularly following reports of marks on his neck during an earlier incident.
Epstein had claimed he was attacked by Tartaglione, an allegation the latter has consistently denied. Tartaglione is currently serving multiple life sentences.
