For the first time in the country's history, the census is going to be entirely 'digital'—a move that will not only leave the burden of paperwork behind but also liberate you from the ordeal of prolonged questioning. The most significant change this time around is the introduction of the 'Self-Enumeration' option. Under this initiative, the Government of India is launching a dedicated portal through which you can personally enter your family's details using your own smartphone. 

As part of this process, every household will be assigned a unique 11-digit 'SE ID' (Self-Enumeration ID); this ID will not only safeguard your identity but also render the entire census process highly accurate and transparent. This exercise is not merely a headcount; it represents a milestone in India's digital journey, laying a robust foundation for future government policies and research.

But what exactly is 'Self-Enumeration'?
To put it simply, it is much like booking a train ticket or ordering food online. Previously, census officials would visit homes, ask questions, and manually fill out information on paper forms. However, with 'Self-Enumeration,' the government is handing you the key to an online portal. All you need to do is visit the government's authorized 'Self-Enumeration Portal.'

As soon as you enter your details on the online portal, the system will generate a unique 11-digit identifier for you, known as the 'Self-Enumeration ID' (SE ID). This ID will begin with the letter 'H'. It is not merely a number; it serves as the key to your security. When census officials knock on your door, you will no longer need to produce bulky registers or spend hours sitting through question-and-answer sessions. Simply present your SE ID, and your census enumeration will be deemed complete within a matter of seconds. The government's primary objective is to ensure that your data is utilized with absolute precision to formulate better future schemes and facilitate research. In other words, the government is now preparing to bring every family and individual together under a single unified framework.

How does one use this portal?
You might now be wondering: how exactly does one use this portal? Let us assure you that the government has made the process as simple as logging into your social media accounts. All you need to do is visit the 'Self-Enumeration Portal' (se.census.gov.in). Once there, the head of the household will log in using their mobile number, which will be verified via a One-Time Password (OTP). Following this, you can select your preferred language; the government offers a choice of 16 languages in total. 

Another remarkable feature of this portal is the inclusion of a map option, allowing you to pinpoint and mark the precise location of your home. You will then be required to answer a few simple questions regarding your household amenities and family members. The moment you click the 'Final Submit' button, that unique 'SE ID' will appear on your screen—an ID that will also be sent to your mobile phone via SMS.
