Despite the calendar nearing May, winter is still holding on tightly. The National Weather Service has announced a winter storm watch for several regions in Colorado, while AccuWeather predicts that frigid temperatures will affect much of the nation later this week.
Colorado Bracing for Heavy Snowfall
Colorado is preparing for significant snowfall, with the NWS issuing a winter storm watch for areas including La Veta Pass, Blanca Peak, and Cuchara. These locations could receive up to 20 inches of snow, while regions west of Colorado Springs may see totals reach three feet. Echo Lake is expected to get around 22 inches, and both East Portal and Berthoud Pass could accumulate as much as 18 inches. The NWS has clearly stated that heavy snow is anticipated in the mountains, with some mixing possible in the foothills and Palmer Divide, driven by a strong upper-wave moving through the Southwest and into the south-central U.S. on Thursday.
Wyoming Faces Additional Snow
Wyoming is also in for more winter weather, having already experienced two storms in the past week. Cloud Peak and Francs Peak are projected to receive an additional 10 inches of snow in the coming days, adding to the existing snowpack.
Unprecedented Cold Temperatures Expected
In addition to the snowfall, a surge of unseasonably cold air is set to break temperature records across the eastern United States. AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham noted that parts of the South might only reach highs in the 40s and 50s, significantly lower than the typical 70s to near 80 degrees for this time of year. This represents a drop of 20 to 30 degrees below average, with some Southern states likely to experience record low maximum temperatures.
The Northeast and Midwest will also face a cold spell, although not as severe as the previous week. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bob Larson indicated that daytime highs in these regions will be several to 10 degrees below average, a milder drop compared to the 15 to 30 degrees below average seen last week. Residents in the impacted areas are advised to stay updated with the National Weather Service and take necessary precautions as the weather changes.
