Why is Quinton de Kock not playing for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad?

The Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has been ruled out against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29 at Wankhede Stadium. The Protea batter was introduced to the squad as a replacement of Rohit Sharma. And in the very first match he smashed an unbeaten century for the side against Punjab Kings. After that, he played two more matches but could not make a mark.

However, today during the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya informed that QdK has injured his wrist. This is the reason he has been left out from the Playing Xi. Meanwhile, Ryan Rickleton has been included in the squad in QdK's place. MI also bought Robin Minz to the squad. Pandya siad,

"Mitchell (Santner) was unfortunate, and so was Quinny today. He just did something to his wrist. We have a couple of changes for this team. Ryan (Rickelton) comes in place of Quinny. We've got Robin Minz."

On the other side, the wait continues to see Rohit Sharma back for the MI Paltan. Currently he is dealing with a hamstring injury, and it's his fourth match in a row that he is on the bench. The MI skipper, however, informed that the wait will be elongated further.

Rohit is yet to fully fit to be available for the side. Pandya added that the former MI captain may take two more matches to gain match fitness. He said,

"Rohit's gonna take a couple of more games. He's been trying, it's not up to exactly where he would want, so not available for the team."

MI struggling at the bottom

Meanwhile MI won the toss and decided to bat first. The team is currently in a precarious position in IPL 2026, sitting at 9th place on the points table with only 2 wins from 7 matches.

MI's path to the top four is narrow but mathematically possible. With 7 games remaining, they typically need 16 points for a guaranteed spot.  They need to win at least 6 out of their remaining 7 matches to reach 16 points. Because of their poor NRR, they must aim for large-margin victories to improve their standing against other mid-table teams.

MI's playing XI:  Ryan Rickelton(w), Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Robin Minz, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar

Impact Subs: Mayank Rawat, Raghu Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Krish Bhagat, Raj Bawa
