Shreyas Iyer is widely regarded as one of the best Indians who ever captain the Indian Premier League. Cricket experts use his strong leadership skills to compare him to tournament legends who achieved success as captains which includes Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni.
Punjab Kings played their first match of the IPL 2026 season last night and lost their first game. Shreyas Iyer lost his first match because he achieved a record that he did not want to have. Iyer's team became the fifth team to lose a match when they failed to protect a score exceeding 200 runs according to historical data.
The Punjab Kings scored 222 runs for 4 wickets within their 20 overs against the Rajasthan Royals. The contest between both teams stayed competitive until the final overs of the second innings.
The chase became more intense for Rajasthan Royals after they lost multiple wickets during the middle overs. Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey who served as the Royals' impact substitute led Rajasthan to victory.
Iyer reached his fifth match as captain when his team lost because they scored more than 200 runs during their first innings. Iyer had previously led the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders before he became the captain of PBKS.
Shreyas Iyer has lost 5 matches which mark him as the captain with the most unsuccessful attempts to defend 200-run leads. The current Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill follows him with 4 defeats. Rishabh Pant who leads the Lucknow Super Giants holds the third position with 3 losses which he shares with former captains Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni.
