Fans of Virgin Island were left feeling "uncomfortable" as the Channel 4 series returned to screens on Monday evening - with some even "complaining to Ofcom". The documentary follows 12 adult virgins as they embark on a unique course in intimacy at a luxury retreat, to see if it can help them overcome their fears and finally become sexual. The first episode of the second series focused on shame as the resident experts put on a masterclass to help the virgins learn how to shed any mortification. The virgins, aged 21 to 35, are helped to confront what is holding them back as they reshape their relationship with sex. However, as the programme aired some "cringey" scenes, fans on social media shared their thoughts.

Taking to X/Twitter, one person fumed: "The state of terrestrial TV. The sort of filth like #Virginisland should have no place. I intend to make a full complaint to @ofcom after this series."

Another added: "Don't worry lads and lasses, we're uncomfortable too #VirginIsland." As a third echoed: "I forgot how awful this is #virginisland," followed by a GIF of someone hiding behind a pillow.

And someone else said: " #VirginIsland How did this s*** get a second series?!"

However, other viewers became emotional from the episode, as some of the cast members opened up on why they find it so difficult to become intimate.

One person wrote: "That was truly awful. My heart broke for her. Hideous bullies. #VirginIsland," as another said: "It's a shame for Katie that the bullying she had at school affected her even years after she left and into her adult life. #VirginIsland."

Channel 4's synopsis for the show expands on some of the issues faced as it reads: "Celeste and Danielle, backed by an expanded team of sex therapists, have surprises that push them to confront their sexual issues-from religious shame and online bullying to body image anxiety.

"The experts also tackle sexual disorders on the rise among young people, such as premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and vaginismus.

"With many scared of intimate touch, will anyone fall in love, fall into bed, or even lose their virginity? The results are remarkable - more life-changing than ever before."
