King Charles and Queen Camilla are keeping calm and carrying on with their long-planned US state visit despite a shooter allegedly taking aim at President Donald Trump less than 48 hours ago. The White House are calling the incident at Saturday night's White House Correspondents' Dinner an attempted assassination of the US President, after a gunman tried to storm the ballroom where Mr Trump, the First Lady and other top officials were enjoying a black tie dinner.
Suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was armed with a shotgun, handgun and knives when he rushed a security checkpoint and ran toward the ballroom where the glitzy event was being held, authorities said. One officer who was shot but protected by his bulletproof vest was taken to hospital. The 31-year-old is understood to have been a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held.
But on Sunday night, it was announced that the programme of the royal visit will "proceed as planned" following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic. It is understood there will be some modest operational adjustments to one or two royal engagements during the trip, but the overall plan remains as previously outlined.
