Dehradun: The sacred Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2026 is set to begin soon, with the first batch of devotees scheduled to leave on May 20. The doors of the revered shrine will officially open on May 23, marking the start of the annual pilgrimage.
On Sunday, Narendra Jeet Singh Bindra, President of the Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib Management Trust, met with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to discuss preparations. He invited the Chief Minister to attend the farewell ceremony of the first batch of pilgrims on May 20, which will be traditionally led by the Panj Pyaras.
CM Dhami’s assuranceChief Minister Dhami assured that the state government and administration are working with full commitment to ensure the convenience and safety of pilgrims. He said that travel arrangements are being continuously monitored and every possible assistance will be provided to make the yatra successful, smooth, and organized.
He emphasized that the government is focused on avoiding any inconvenience to devotees and is coordinating with local authorities to strengthen facilities along the route.
About Hemkund SahibHemkund Sahib, located at an altitude of 4,633 meters in Chamoli district, is one of the most revered Sikh pilgrimage sites. Surrounded by seven snow-clad peaks, the shrine is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. The name “Hemkund” means “Lake of Snow,” and the shrine sits beside a glacial lake, offering breathtaking views.
The pilgrimage is considered spiritually uplifting but physically challenging due to the steep trek and high altitude. Every year, thousands of devotees from across India and abroad undertake this journey, making it one of the most significant Sikh pilgrimages.
