New Delhi: Veteran Indian photographer Raghu Rai passed away at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last in a private hospital in Delhi on Sunday. According to the family, his last rites will be performed at Lodhi crematorium at 4 pm. The news of his demise has sent a wave of mourning across the photojournalism world.

Raghu Rai was battling cancer

Raghu Rai’s son Nitin Rai told that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago. He got some relief after treatment, but later the cancer reached the brain. His condition continued to deteriorate due to age problems. He is survived by his wife Gurmeet, son Nitin and three daughters Lagan, Avni and Purvai.

Raghu Rai was born in 1942 in Jhang, present-day Pakistan. Born before independence, Raghu Rai started photography in the 1960s. Gradually he created his own identity in the country and abroad. He has had more than 18 books published and has participated in many international exhibitions.

He was considered the father of photojournalism in India.

Raghu Rai is called the father of photojournalism in India. He covered many historical events including the Bangladesh War of Independence. In the year 1971, he was awarded the Padma Shri award. His work was appreciated not only in the country but all over the world.
