Bogota (Colombia): Terrorists unleashed chaos in the South American nation of Colombia. In an explosive attack targeting a passenger bus on Saturday, at least 13 people were killed and more than 17 others were seriously injured. The army chief condemned the incident as an "inhumane act of terrorism."
Bus Targeted by Terrorists
While the bus, which had departed from Cecilia, was traveling along the Pan-American Highway, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists detonated with a massive blast. Due to the intensity of the explosion, the bus was completely mangled, and several people lost their lives on the spot. According to the local health department, the injured include five young children, all of whom have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
Drug Mafia Involvement
The Colombian army chief has labeled this brutal act a "terrorist deed." Conflict between drug trafficking networks and militant organizations active in the region is cited as the primary reason for the attack. Specifically, it is suspected that a rebel group led by 'Ivan Mordisco,' which did not agree to the 2016 peace treaty, is behind this crime.
Citizens Reeling from Serial Attacks
In the last two days, more than 26 explosion-related incidents have occurred in this region. Terrorists have been targeting public property and infrastructure. Security forces had previously foiled a drone-based explosive attack attempt on a radar center belonging to the Civil Aviation Department. The bus explosion occurred shortly after that event.
Tight Security
Following the attack, a high-level meeting was held under the leadership of Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez, where it was decided to take stringent action against the terrorists. The government has announced a reward of over 8 crore rupees for information leading to the capture of those responsible for the attack.
Currently, army personnel have been deployed throughout the area, with public safety being made the top priority. Officials expressed concern that extremist groups are resorting to such acts of sabotage to gain control over drug trafficking routes.
