Roshan Mathews' journey to become a versatile actor
Coming from a family where stability mattered, his father worked in a bank and his mother was an PWD engineer, Roshan found himself considering conventional career paths like medicine and engineering. He even attended coaching classes for medical and engineering entrance exams. Looking back, he describes those choices as somewhat impulsive and driven more by circumstance than genuine interest. At one point, he enrolled in an engineering course but soon realised it wasn’t for him. He eventually dropped out, a decision that may have seemed risky at the time but proved crucial in shaping his future. Later, he joined Madras Christian College to pursue a BSc in Physics. Even this, he admits, was not a deeply thought-out decision but rather another step in figuring things out.
Roshan shared that his relationship with physics was complicated. While he didn’t initially choose it out of passion, certain experiences changed his perspective. A few inspiring teachers and exposure to subjects like engineering physics helped him discover that he genuinely enjoyed understanding concepts, not just for exams, but to explain them to others. Despite this, he still wasn’t convinced that it was something he wanted to pursue as a career.
What stands out in Roshan’s story is his honesty about uncertainty. He explained that, at that stage in life, he was not driven by a clear roadmap. Instead, he followed instinct. He believes many of his decisions were impulsive, but they eventually led him in the right direction. Rather than forcing himself into a predefined path, he chose to explore what felt right in the moment.
This exploration eventually led him to theatre, a space where he found both comfort and purpose. Roshan revealed that his entry into theatre wasn’t heavily planned either, but once he began, he felt a strong connection to the craft. It gave him a sense of clarity that had been missing during his earlier academic pursuits. From there, transitioning into films felt like a natural progression.
