Udupi: Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has directed officials to effectively carry out a survey of manuscripts in the district under the Gyan Bharatham Mission, aimed at preserving India’s knowledge heritage using modern technology.

She was speaking after chairing a meeting at the NIC Hall in her office regarding the implementation of a project for the preservation and digitisation of manuscripts in the district.

Under the scheme, centuries-old handwritten texts, manuscripts and documents available across the country are being identified and permanently preserved using modern technology. The initiative includes survey, preservation, digitisation, registration, critical editing, translation and publication to make the country’s rich cultural heritage accessible to the public.

Shared responsibility

The Deputy Commissioner said ancient knowledge related to science, literature, medicine and religion is preserved in forms such as palm-leaf manuscripts and old handwritten records. Protecting these materials is the responsibility of everyone, she added.

She noted that manuscripts are a valuable part of the country’s culture, tradition and knowledge system. More than 6,000 manuscripts have already been digitised across 40 centres. The aim of the survey is to ensure that these resources are preserved for future generations. She also advised people to contact district-level coordinators of Gyan Bharatham for more information.

Urban Development Cell Project Director Subrahmanya, Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi, Gyan Bharatham district coordinator Dr Gopalachar, archaeologist Prof T. Murugeshi and others were present at the meeting.

Public participation encouraged

The DC urged mutts, institutional repositories, temples, libraries, ashrams and private individuals to safeguard manuscripts in their possession. They can voluntarily participate in the survey by registering details through the Gyan Bharatham app and website (gynabharatham.com). She clarified that there is no need for any concern regarding the survey.
