There is also a religious significance to the groom riding a mare. Lord Rama used a horse for the Ashwamedha Yagna, and riding symbolizes the acceptance of challenges. Historical texts like the Ramayana and Mahabharata mention how great warriors rode horses into battle. Controlling a horse is often compared to mastering one's senses.
