A catastrophic explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Thrissur district, Kerala, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left over 40 others injured on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:35 PM in Mundathikode. An official from the Vadakkanchery fire station informed local media that the factory was situated in a rice field that had dried out after the harvest, and the extreme heat likely exacerbated the situation.
Most of the injured are employees of the fireworks unit. Emergency responders, including firefighters and ambulances, arrived promptly at the scene. The injured are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, including the Thrissur Medical College Hospital. The official noted that they received reports of the explosion shortly after it occurred.
Firefighting units from Vadakkanchery, Kunnamkulam, and Thrissur coordinated with local police for rescue operations. However, officials indicated that rescue teams had not yet reached the site of the fireworks. A fire officer from Kunnamkulam stated that the quantity of materials stored there remains unclear, and there is a risk of further explosions.
